The Washington Heights Community Service

My first, last and most important job at Columbia was to be the “professor” (as Fran Cournos liked to call me) on the Community Service. Under three successive directors, Marvin Hertz, Manuel Trujollo, and Fran Cournos herself, I led discussion groups, did demonstration family interviews, supervised residents, and for a year between Hertz and Trujillo was the acting director of the service while the search for new director went on.

The Service celebrated an anniversary of its founding a few tears before I retired and it was a great pleasure to give this talk on that occasion – celebrating its work. It is also a small exercise in history, for an audience of people who were making that history as well as living with its consequences.
